Three new Nigerian senators take the oath of office, these include Musa Mustapha, the senator from Yobe East, and Pam Dachungyang the new senator from Plateau North. These three have taken their places in the upper house of parliament.

Additionally assuming his position in the senate chamber is Anthony Ani, the newly elected senator from Ebonyi South.

During Tuesday’s plenary, the three new legislators received their Senate oaths.

Around 11:45 a.m., Senate President Godswill Akpabio gave Senate Clerk Chinedu Akubueze the order to administer the oath of office to the newly elected senators.

The Senate President shook hands with each senator after they took the oath of office and gave them copies of the Senate Standing Rules.

Following that, they made small talk with other senators before being escorted to their seats by a sergeant at arms.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) held bye-elections and a rerun in their respective constituencies on February 3rd, and the new senators prevailed.

While a rerun was held in Plateau North, bye-elections were held in Yobe East and Ebonyi South.

The former Minority Leader, Simon Mwadkwon, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member, was replaced by Mr. Dachungyang, an Action Democratic Party (ADP) member, after the Court of Appeal fired him in November of last year.

All Progressives Congress (APC) member Mr. Ani took over for Minister of Works David Umahi, who quit from the upper house following his appointment.

Ibrahim Geidam, the minister of police affairs, resigned after being appointed and was replaced by Mr. Mustapha, an APC member.

The Senate President greeted the newly elected senators in the chamber and congratulated them on their election victories.

With 122,442 votes, Mr. Dachungyang won the rerun in his constituency, according to the official results released by the INEC.

Mr. Ani received 46,270 votes, while Mr. Mustapha received 68,778.

As the three new Nigerian senators take the oath of office, the new senator from Plateau North will be the only ADP senator in the Senate due to the arrangement of the major parties in the upper house.
