Philippines swears in Ferdinand Marcos as her 17th President

Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos has been sworn in as the 17th national president of the Philippines at the National Museum in Manila on Thursday.

Ferdinand Marcos took his oath of office in the presence of his 92-year-old mother, Imelda, family members and the citizens of Philippines.

In his address after the oath of office, Marcos gave a speech and in response to that, he called on the Philippines to come together as a united nation.

“We will go further with each other than against each other, pushing forward, not pulling each other back out of fear of a misplaced sense of weakness,” he said in his speech.

The 64-year-old Marcos said that his administration would map out a detailed and an all-inclusive plan for the transformation of the economy of Philippi.

He also promised that address the insufficiency of food issue and build more infrastructure.

“I pledged to bring about changes that will benefit all.

“I am ready for the task. I will need your help. I will get it done.

“On the road ahead, immediate months will be rough, but I will walk that road with you,” he promised.

For the inauguration, more than 15,000 police and security personnel have been deployed across the capital.

Foreign dignitaries, diplomats, and three former Philippine presidents, Fidel Ramos, Joseph Estrada and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, attended.

Marcos was received by the outgoing President Rodrigo Duterte at the Malacanang presidential palace before the inauguration.

Ferdinand Marcos was declared the winner by the Philippine Congress on May 25th after the May 9 presidential election that took place on May 9, with over 31 million votes or more than 58 per cent of the votes cast.

Marcos succeeded Duterte who has successfully completed his six-year term.

In the Philippine constitution, a president is permitted to serve for a six-year term in office.
