Over seven million Nigerians who pre-registered to vote online were unable to finish the process physically, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)

This information was made public by INEC as the CVR registration came to a close on sunday.

Remember that the commission started the CVR procedure in June 2021 by allowing Nigerians to submit their biodata and necessary documents online. Afterward, candidates would visit INEC-designated centers to finish the process physically, including a biometric capture.

In a report issued by the commission, it was stated that 10,487,972 Nigerians pre-registered online.

According to the commission, just 3,444,378 Nigerians, or 32.8 percent, finished the procedure physically at the centres.

The 7,043,594 people made up over 67 percent of those who started their registration procedure online but were unable to get a voter card, making it likely that they won’t be allowed to cast a ballot in the general elections of 2023.

In the meantime, according to INEC, 12,298,944 Nigerians registered to vote in total, 8,854,566 of them completed the process totally in the physical centres.

Remember that INEC had set a deadline of June 30 for the CVR in preparation for the elections of 2023, but it was extended to July after the commission was prevented from doing so by an Abuja federal high court.
