Another victory for Nigeria’s golden girl Amusan as she wins Berlin meet

At the ISTAF 2022 Berlin competition on Sunday, world record holder Tobi Amusan dominated the women’s 100-meter hurdles, taking first place in 12.45 seconds. The competition is a Silver category stop on the World Athletics Continental Tour.

Amusan claimed she was hopeful of improving at the Olympic Stadium this weekend after finishing in second place in the 2022 Lausanne Diamond League meeting last month when she started Sunday’s event.

The Nigerian star made a good start to establish a sizeable lead before accelerating to claim the victory.

Even minutes after her jubilation, she was seen limping at the finish line after clearing the final obstacle. The world champion admitted that she felt OK and was looking forward to her upcoming match at the Zurich final of the 2022 Wanda Diamond League.

Olympic bronze winner Megan Tapper of Jamaica fell back into third place in 12.66, while American Tia Jones, a two-time world junior champion, finished hard over the closing obstacles to take second place in 12.58.

After winning, Amusan commented “It has been a long season, but I am still alive. I just wanted to finish strong today. I was here to execute.

“I need to work on what I need to work on, but it is alright. There is always room for improvement. I need to improve my start and my finish.

“I will race again in Zurich. Today we had a great competitive field. My goal was to focus on myself.”

After setting the current world record in the semi-final by running 12.12 seconds, Amusan won the world championship in Oregon in July with the quickest time under any circumstances of 12.06.

Isabel Mayer, the top German finisher, recorded a personal best time of 13.24 to beat her 13.25 performance from June.

“It could not have been better for me today,” said Mayer. “I was super excited because the German Championships here were a bit traumatic for me. I felt very good today.

“I just wanted to have fun and that worked out today.”

In addition, Ese Brume, who on Friday won the women’s long jump competition at the Allianz Memorial Van Damme in Brussels, Belgium, to secure her maiden victory at the Diamond League Meet, came in second in Berlin.

The Olympic and world champion Malaika Mihambo triumphed with a leap of 6.92m, beating out the Commonwealth champion who cleared 6.78m.

In Brussels, Brume won for the first time in her career after placing second in Doha (2018) and Eugene (2022).
