The Nigeria Professional Football League’s (NPFL) operator, League Management Company (LMC), has been disavowed by the federal government (NPFL).

Ismaila Abubakar, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, announced this on Friday in Abuja.

The organization, LMC, holds the license for managing and promoting the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

After taking into account some illegal activities the organization has engaged in, specifically “the Court’s declaration of the National Football League (NFL) as an illegal body,” Abubakar stated that the decision takes immediate effect.

The ministry considers it an “aberration” for a private company to manage or control the league permanently.

He instructed the NFF to revoke the organization’s license and to immediately appoint an interim management team to run the league.

According to the statement, “this decision has become necessary because of the obvious aberration (which is at odds with our football statutes or the laws of the land) whereby a private company is gifted the mandate to manage or run the league indefinitely, without the full involvement and leadership of the clubs and devoid of any process to monitor the progress and development of the game.”

“Consequent to the foregoing, and in order to save our domestic football from complete collapse, the Federal Government will no longer recognize the Board of the LMC and the LMC as a body as the operator of the Nigerian Professional Football League.”

To avoid further chaos in our domestic football, the NFF is advised to immediately revoke the license granted to the LMC and, in the interim, establish an Interim Management Committee (IMC), to include the current Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer of the LMC to oversee the league’s affairs until a proper Professional League Board is established in accordance with the NFF’s statutes.
