US & UK citizens flee Abuja as tension heightens on terror attacks

US and UK embassies warn Nigerians of possible terror attacks in Abuja

THE terror alert issued by the governments of the United States (US) and the United Kingdom (UK), on the possible attacks in Abuja has in recent times increased the level of tension in the capital city of Nigeria.

It will be recalled that on Monday, the UK embassy had issued a warning to its citizens telling them to leave Abuja or pay keen attention to security information and be vigilant.

However, on Wednesday, the Federal Government of Nigeria debunked the terror alert by the UK embassy, noting that Nigeria is safe.

As at Thursday, the United States had began evacuation of their citizens and staff in Abuja.

In a travel update posted on the UK’s official website on Wednesday, which was still available till Thursday, the UK government told the British nationals by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), to avoid travelling to Abuja.

“The FCDO now advises against all but essential travel to the Federal Capital Territory, including the city of Abuja.

“The updated advice outlines that there is an increased threat of terrorist attack in Abuja. British nationals are advised to stay alert, avoid non-essential travel within the city and follow the local news and the advice of security authorities,” the update said.

The UK government also said that the travel advice will be updated often to cover the current happenings in Abuja and in Nigeria, for the safety of its citizens.

However, according to the advice, the British High Commission is said to be available for essential services.
