Monday, members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ibadan (UI) branch, protested the Federal Government’s ruthless treatment of university lecturers.

The protesting lecturers carried posters and sang on campus to express their anger.

After the rally, it is said that a congress would be held immediately.

Prof. Ayoola Akinwole, Chairman of the UI Chapter of ASUU, addressed students and journalists during the rally and stated that it is a nonviolent protest.

He encouraged the federal government to adhere to the agreements reached with labor unions.

Akinwole stated, “The present government is one of the most lawless governments Nigeria has ever seen. The government that doesn’t obey its own rule, the government that doesn’t obey its own court, a government that is merciless in meting out draconian policies on the working class. Our people say no to all these treatments.”

Prof. Ademola Aremu, the former National Treasurer of ASUU, lambasted the government for what he deemed to be the discriminatory treatment of academics.

In October, ASUU affiliates had planned a one-day nationwide demonstration over the Federal Government’s payment of half salary to lecturers.

Members of ASUU at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), among others, have recently demonstrated.

ASUU ended its eight-month strike on October 14, 2022, after the National Industrial Court ordered lecturers to return to work.

However, according to the union, the government’s response, particularly its “pro-rata” payment of academics’ October salary, presented them as temporary employees.

Members of the ASUU chapter at the University of Ilorin demonstrated on Monday against what they termed the casualization of intellectual workers in the nation.

The university Dons were observed holding a variety of banners to express their displeasure as they traversed the campus’s key regions.
