Sunday’s shooting in the suburbs of the Canadian city of Toronto resulted in the deaths of five persons and the wounding of another, according to the police.

The suspect was killed in an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement, local police chief Jim MacSween informed reporters, adding that the incident occurred in an apartment complex.

The injured party was transported to the hospital, and their life is no longer in jeopardy.

Officers were dispatched to the scene on Sunday evening,

“Once the officers arrived, they were met with… a horrendous scene where numerous victims were deceased,” MacSween told reporters, according to Canadian media.

Police were examining the motivation and any possible connection between the victims and the unidentified male suspect.

Allegedly, the suspect acted alone.

The bodies were discovered in separate apartments in the Vaughan, Ontario, building, which is located approximately 30 kilometers (20 miles) north of Toronto.

Canadian media reported that residents were evacuated instantly and dozens of ambulances and police officers arrived at the location in the evening.

While Canada experiences far fewer major shootings than its American neighbor, a recent increase in gun crime forced the country to pass legislation banning firearms.

In April 2020, a shooter posing as a police officer killed 22 people in Nova Scotia, Canada’s deadliest mass shooting.

In September of this year, a man murdered 11 individuals and stabbed 18 others, primarily in a remote indigenous community in the Canadian state of Saskatchewan.

In Canada, firearm-related violent crimes account for fewer than three percent of all violent crimes, yet since 2009, the per capita rate of guns being shot with the intent to kill or injure has climbed by a factor of five.

In May 2020, Canada will ban 1,500 types of military-grade or assault-style rifles, days after the shooting in Nova Scotia.
