More than fifty people were hospitalized in western Canada after a bus crash on a highway, according to provincial authorities.

The reason for the Saturday evening collision, which occurred on a highway around 330 kilometers (200 miles) east of Vancouver in a region of British Columbia plagued by many days of severe winter weather, has not yet been determined.

Premier of British Columbia David Eby expressed shock and sadness at the news.

In a statement, he said, “Our thoughts are with those impacted by the crash, their loved ones, and the first responders and healthcare workers giving their all to treat people and keep them safe,”

The regional health authority Interior Health tweeted that 53 individuals were being treated at three hospitals, but it was unable to provide any other information regarding the patient’s illnesses.

A part of the highway hit by the accident remained closed until Sunday morning, according to tweets from provincial transportation authorities.

During one of the busiest travel periods of the year preceding the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, the tragedy occurred as severe weather has pummeled vast swaths of North America, snarling transport and triggering multiple fatal accidents.
