HBO’s ‘Succession’ and ‘The Last of Us’ lead 2023 Emmy Nominations

On Wednesday, the 2023 Emmy Awards nominations were announced and we have seen HBO and Max receiving the most nominations with Netflix trailing closely behind them. HBO/Max received 127 Emmy nominations, making it the 21st time that it has surpassed all other networks and streaming services/platforms in a single year.

Notably, HBO’s “Succession” received a record-breaking 27 nominations. With 25 nominations and four wins, “Succession” was the most nominated show of 2022 last year. The show has received 13 Emmy nominations in total. In May, the hit drama series completed its final and fourth season.

In addition, three actors from “Succession” were nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series: Brian Cox (as Logan Roy), Jeremy Strong (as Kendall Roy), and Kieran Culkin (as Roman Roy). This is the first time that three actors from the same series have been nominated for Lead Actor at the same time.

The blockbuster video game adaption “The Last of Us” received 24 nominations, while “The White Lotus” received 23.

Netflix, which received 103 nominations for popular films such as “Wednesday,” “The Crown,” “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” “Beef,” and “Dead to Me,” is Max’s (formerly HBO Max) closest challenger in the race.

Hulu continues to amass nominations, receiving 64 this year after setting a record of 58 in 2022. In 2021, Hulu received just 26 nominations. With 13 nominations, “The Bear,” a new Hulu series, received the most.

Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso” received the majority of the streamers’ 54 nominations, with 21 in total, a small increase from its 20 nominations the previous year.

The Roku Channel and Amazon Freevee received 12 and four nominations, respectively, for free, ad-supported streaming services. Roku’s original “WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story” received the most nominations, with eight, while Amazon Freevee’s “Jury Duty” received four.

The 75th Primetime Emmy Awards will be broadcast on Fox on September 18. However, due to the present writer’s strike, there may be a delay.
