Reddit is killing its Gold awards system – Following the uproar over its API changes, Reddit is effecting another change that is upsetting its users, as the company announced that it’s retiring its coins and awards system. Although the platform has confirmed that it’s working on a new rewards system, it hasn’t provided details about when the launch could be. Users could formerly buy Reddit Coins and spend them on prizes for others.

Users will no longer be able to acquire fresh coins starting today, according to Reddit. All existing awards and coins will remain available until September 12, 2023.

Reddit stated in a blog post that it is making this adjustment to simplify its platform. According to the firm, people dislike the “clutter from awards and all the steps that go into actually awarding content.” As a result, it’s planning to revamp how rewards function on its platform but hasn’t specified what the new system would look like.

“It’s become clear that awards and coins as they exist today need to be re-thought, and the existing system sunsetted,” the company wrote. “Rewarding content and contribution (as well as something golden) will still be a core part of Reddit. We’ll share more in the coming months as to what this new future looks like.”

For example, the Reddit community might use currency and accolades in various ways to acknowledge good contributions from other users. Awards might be shown as small icons on posts on the platform. Reddit Gold was the initial medal introduced by Reddit, and it evolved as Reddit added more prizes such as Reddit Silver, Platinum, Ternium, and Argentium. There are currently over 50 different sorts of rewards available on the platform.

Reddit said it will reveal more information about a “new direction for awarding that allows Redditors to empower one another and create more meaningful ways to reward high-quality contributions on Reddit” in the coming months. According to the organization, the purpose of the revamp is to build a system that is straightforward, easy to use, and easy to comprehend.

Users are outraged by the company’s choice to retire its current rewards system before unveiling the redesigned one, which leaves the site without a rewards system.

“Killing features without replacements ready, yep sounds like Reddit to me,” one user wrote under the company’s announcement post. “In other words, you’re removing a popular feature and charging the same amount for premium,” another user wrote.

Reddit’s latest announcement comes as the company continues to face criticism for charging developers for API access. Several subreddits and administrators objected to the change. Over the last month, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman has repeatedly defended the company’s decision. Reddit appears steadfast in its stance, and new adjustments to the API fee structure appear unlikely.
