Apple is testing a ChatGPT-like AI chatbot – The battle for supremacy among tech giants in the AI sphere is still heated and very far from over as tech firms are looking for ways to level up and stay in the game as long as possible.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is building artificial intelligence capabilities to compete with Open AI, Google, and others. The tech behemoth has developed a chatbot that some programmers internally describe as “Apple GPT.” Apple has yet to choose a plan for distributing the technology to consumers, although it is rumored that a substantial AI-related announcement will be made next year.

According to the source, Apple has developed its own framework, dubbed “Ajax,” to generate massive language models, which are AI-based systems that underpin services like Open AI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard. According to Bloomberg, Ajax runs on Google Cloud and was built with Google JAX, the search giant’s machine learning platform. Ajax is being used by Apple to construct huge language models that will serve as the foundation for the internal ChatGPT-style tool.

Apple did not react immediately to a request for comment.

The chatbot’s internal rollout was temporarily paused due to security worries concerning generative AI, but it has subsequently been made available to additional Apple employees. Although more staff are obtaining access to the chatbot, it still requires special permission. According to Bloomberg, any output from the chatbot cannot be used to develop customer-specific features.

The chatbot is being used by Apple employees to assist with product prototyping. Based on the data it has been trained on, the chatbot may summarize text and answer questions.

The company’s chatbot is comparable to Bard, ChatGPT, and Bing AI in that it lacks any distinguishing characteristics from what is now commercially accessible.

The claim comes as Apple is looking for generative AI talent. The company has a few job posts on its employment page looking for expertise in generative AI. It seeks developers with a “robust understanding of large language models and generative AI.”

While Google, Microsoft, and Meta have been fast to deliver generative AI technologies to the public, Apple has been somewhat silent on the AI front. Although the tech giant has been releasing artificial intelligence features across its products and apps for years, it is now attempting to meet user demand for generative AI tools that can assist with tasks such as composing essays and photos.

According to the article, Apple is attempting to address potential privacy risks related to artificial intelligence. Apple CEO Tim Cook has stated that, while the tech giant will incorporate AI into more of its goods, it will do so on a “thoughtful basis.”
