Activision Blizzard has confirmed that the multiplayer mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is going to go free-to-play this week. The free trial gives you instant access to all of the current season 3 content, including Pelayo’s Lighthouse Arena, the 2v2 Gunfight mode, a variety of classic multiplayer modes, and more.
The trial will run for one week, beginning April 19 at 9:30 pm IST/5 pm BST and ending April 26 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X. If you decide to upgrade to the full MW2 game and the battle-royale tie-in Warzone 2.0, all multiplayer progress will be carried over.
The Season 3 of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 kicked off on April 12, the new season added new operators, a battle pass, and a fresh Gulag arena for its battle royale component. The map, dubbed Blacksite, is also included in the 2v2 Gunfight mode, which debuted in 2019’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Players will compete in team-based matches with randomized weapon load-outs to be the first squad to win six rounds. The free multiplayer week also includes access to the Gunfight mode’s Alley, Shipment, and Exhibit maps in rotation.
Season 3 of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 added two new multiplayer maps to the game: Black Gold and Pelayo’s Lighthouse. During the free access period, only the latter is available, tossing players onto a small stormy island centered on a guiding lighthouse and peppered with several maintenance buildings, a boat dock, and a helipad. The map provides plenty of rocky elevations to gain an advantage, often switching to tight, close-quarter combat when inside the ‘Main Building.’ Swim around enemies to sneak in and stab them to death, or use the raging waves to keep a low profile.
Team Deathmatch, Hardpoint, Domination, Kill Confirmed, Grind, Gun Game, Infected, All or Nothing, and One in the Chamber are among the 6v6 game modes available to players. You’ll have access to 10 MW2 maps across 12 game modes, with the exception of the Santa Sea map, which is only available in Invasion and Ground War modes. Activision also mentioned an ‘additional download’ for those attempting to access the free multiplayer mode, the size of which will vary depending on the platform.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare II launched its Ranked Play segment in February, following the rules established by the Call of Duty League (CDL). It took an extra day to transition into season 3, but it is now updated with new restrictions, which previously allowed the SPW 40MM Drill attachment and specific FJX Ammunition Types to appear unrestricted in custom loadouts. While players must be at least level 16 to access Ranked Play, all weapons and attachments are unlocked automatically to ensure Fairplay.
The free multiplayer week for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 begins on April 19 at 9:30 pm IST/5 pm BST on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X.
