Amid the country’s increasing fuel prices, the Ogun State government has taken a significant step to ease the burden on its transport sector by launching 100 CNG Buses (Compressed Natural Gas buses). This move, initiated by Governor Dapo Abiodun, aims to provide an affordable and environmentally friendly alternative for local transporters in the mids of the ongoing petrol crisis the country is facing.
Insight on Ogun State’s Response with 100 CNG Buses to the Fuel Crisis
The ongoing fuel price crisis in Nigeria has placed immense pressure on transporters and commuters alike. In response, Governor Abiodun unveiled a fleet of 100 brand-new, 18-seater CNG-powered Toyota Hiace buses.
These vehicles will not only offer a cost-effective alternative to petrol but also contribute to reducing the state’s carbon footprint. During the official announcement in Abeokuta, Governor Abiodun emphasized that this initiative was designed to stabilize transportation costs and provide long-term relief to citizens affected by fuel scarcity.
The CNG buses will be made available to transport unions through a flexible installment payment plan, which allows transporters to acquire the vehicles over time. Governor Abiodun expressed confidence in the transport unions’ ability to responsibly manage the buses and meet their financial obligations.
Speaking at the event, the governor said, “We will make them available to you, and you can pay in installments over a period of time. You have demonstrated commitment and seriousness, and we are confident that when we give you these buses, you will utilize them responsibly and pay back on time.”
Federal Support for the Initiative
In addition to Ogun State’s transportation infrastructure, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has committed to supporting the state by providing 20 additional CNG buses and 500 conversion kits. These conversion kits will enable existing petrol vehicles to switch to CNG, offering even more options to local transporters. This federal backing underscores the importance of sustainable transportation solutions in alleviating the pressures of fluctuating fuel prices.
Governor Abiodun also underscored the government’s role in curbing excessive fare hikes, noting that while transport costs are expected to rise due to the fuel hike, they should not exceed 25-30%. His administration remains committed to ensuring that fare increases remain proportionate to the fuel price surge.
The introduction of CNG buses in Ogun State marks a critical step toward reducing dependency on petrol and ensuring stable, fair transportation pricing. Governor Abiodun’s forward-thinking approach, combined with federal support, could set a precedent for other states in addressing the challenges posed by fuel scarcity and environmental concerns.
