The Nigerian Army has launched an investigation into a viral video showing an alleged assault involving a Major General and two other soldiers. Acting Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, issued the directive, emphasizing the need to uncover the facts surrounding the incident, which has drawn widespread condemnation online.

In the video, the soldiers are seen physically assaulting a man and a woman in what appears to be a public setting. Reports suggest the altercation stemmed from a traffic incident where the civilians allegedly overtook the soldiers’ vehicle. The man was left visibly injured, with blood on his face, while the woman appeared distressed. The footage has sparked outrage, with calls for accountability within the military’s ranks.

According to the Nigerian Army’s spokesperson, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, the events leading to the altercation remain unclear. He stated, “The circumstances leading to this incident are not clear at the moment. However, the Acting Chief of Army Staff has ordered an immediate investigation to unravel the true circumstances surrounding this altercation.”

Army’s Stance on Professionalism

The Army has reiterated its commitment to maintaining high professional standards. Nwachukwu assured the public of a thorough probe, adding, “Due diligence will be applied to reach a logical conclusion on this matter.” The investigation aims to identify those responsible and ensure justice is served.

The Nigerian Army’s leadership has emphasized adherence to the rules of engagement and respect for human rights. In a separate statement regarding similar incidents, the Army declared that such behavior is inconsistent with its values and will not be tolerated.

Public Reaction and Next Steps

The viral video’s widespread circulation has intensified scrutiny on military accountability. Advocacy groups and citizens have called for swift action against the perpetrators, urging the Army to uphold its promise of impartiality. As the investigation progresses, the Army has encouraged the public to provide credible information on similar incidents to ensure systemic reform within its ranks.

This case follows recent efforts by the Nigerian Army to improve its image and accountability, particularly after addressing other reports of misconduct. The Acting Chief of Army Staff’s directive for immediate action reflects an attempt to restore public trust and demonstrate transparency in handling such issues.

As investigations continue, the Army’s response will be closely monitored to ensure justice is served and to reinforce its commitment to professionalism and respect for human rights.
