…. asks Peter Obi to appoint new campaign DG

THE Director-General of the Labour Party (LP) presidential campaign council, Doyin Okupe has announced his resignation as the campaign director of the party.

This was disclosed in a letter dated 20th December, 2022, which was written by him and addressed to the presidential candidate of LP, Peter Obi.

The former Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan in the letter said: “Dear Peter, you will recall that I briefed you yesterday about my personal travails in seeking justice and clearing my name using the Nigerian Legal System to pursue same.”

“I have invested too much in your campaign to allow my personal travails to become a source of distraction.

“In the circumstances, I have opted to step aside and plead that you appoint a new Campaign DG who can continue the assignment with zero distractions.”

“God bless you and your family.”

It's time to step aside. But I am with PO and the Obidients and the Presidential Campaigns till God gives us victory in Jesus Name. pic.twitter.com/ZByUqN9orr

The resignation of Okupe is coming in hours after the former SSA to President Jonathan was convicted of money laundering by a federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Monday.

Also, having been found guilty of 26 charges out of the 59-count charges which were made against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the LP’s DG has been sentenced to two years imprisonment.

Meanwhile, an option was granted to him to pay a fine of N500,000 for each of the counts labelled against him, amounting to N13, 000,000, which he did after the sentencing.

However, the spokesman of the Labour Party campaign council, Yunusa Tanko, has assured members of the party that the resignation of Okupe will not have an effect on the party, even as the party continues with its campaigns ahead of the general elections.
