In a heartfelt broadcast to the nation, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu addressed the escalating violence and unrest stemming from the ongoing #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests. Speaking with a heavy heart, the President acknowledged the turmoil in several states and the tragic loss of lives in Borno, Jigawa, Kano, and Kaduna.

Key Highlights from President Tinubu’s Address:

  1. Loss of Lives and Property: Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and the destruction of public facilities and businesses. He emphasized that the destruction only sets the nation back, as resources will now be diverted to restoration efforts.
  2. Call for Suspension of Protests: Urging protesters to suspend their demonstrations and make room for dialogue, Tinubu emphasized the need for unity and collective effort to reshape the nation’s destiny.
  3. Ensuring Public Order: The President reiterated his constitutional duty to protect lives and property and warned those exploiting the protests for political gain that they would face the full force of the law.
  4. Commitment to Good Governance: Tinubu outlined his vision for a just and prosperous Nigeria, highlighting the significant economic strides made over the past 14 months, including a doubling of government revenues and a reduction in debt servicing costs.
  5. Economic Reforms: He defended his decision to remove fuel subsidies and abolish multiple foreign exchange systems, stating these measures were necessary to reverse decades of economic mismanagement.
  6. Infrastructure and Social Programs: Tinubu detailed ongoing infrastructure projects and social programs aimed at boosting economic output and supporting the youth, including the Compressed Natural Gas Initiative, student loan schemes, and housing projects.
  7. Food Security and Agriculture: The President announced measures to increase food production and reduce tariffs on essential commodities to drive down prices.
  8. Appeal to Youth: Addressing the youth directly, Tinubu acknowledged their frustrations and assured them of the government’s commitment to listening and addressing their concerns.
  9. Call for Unity and Progress: Tinubu urged Nigerians to choose hope over fear, unity over division, and progress over stagnation, emphasizing the collective task of building a brighter future for the nation.
  10. Maintaining Law and Order: The President called on security operatives to maintain peace and order while respecting human rights, ensuring the safety and security of all Nigerians.

President Tinubu concluded by expressing gratitude and urging all Nigerians to work together to build a better future, emphasizing that democratic governance must be preserved and promoted.

The President’s address comes at a critical time as the nation grapples with widespread unrest. His call for dialogue and unity aims to quell the violence and pave the way for a collaborative effort to address the underlying issues driving the protests.
