Senate pleads for extension of deadline for new Naira notes to 31st June 2023

WITH few days left to the adoption of the new Naira notes as the legal tender of Nigeria, the Senate has pleaded the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to extend from January 31st to June 31st, 2023.

This is coming after Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South moved motion over the brevity of the deadline.

Senator Ndume, speaking in favour of the people of Borno noted that the deadline issued by the apex bank is short and those in Borno State have been faced with the challenge of returning the old Naira notes to their banks as directed by CBN.

Meanwhile, it will be recalled that the Governor of CBN, Godwin Emefiele, had earlier announced in October that the new Naira notes will be officially used from October 2023, giving opportunity to Nigerians to return the old bank notes.

The redesigned Naira notes was later unveiled by the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, in November and has been circulated to Nigerians.
