Sundar Pichai alerts Google employees to impending layoffs, although it promises not to be as severe as that of last year.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai warned staff members in a memo that additional layoffs are anticipated this year, following the company’s over 1,000 worker layoffs across several divisions last week and the 100 job cuts at YouTube.

According to Pichai’s memo, which The Verge published, the company will need to make “tough choices” in order to achieve its lofty objectives.

The CEO stated that this year’s layoffs won’t be as severe as those from the previous year, when the company let go of 12,000 employees, or 6% of its total staff.

“These role eliminations are not at the scale of last year’s reductions, and will not touch every team. But I know it’s very difficult to see colleagues and teams impacted,” he wrote in an email to employees.

“Many of these changes are already announced, though to be upfront, some teams will continue to make specific resource allocation decisions throughout the year where needed, and some roles may be impacted.”

With over 1,000 employees let go, Google’s layoffs last week affected multiple teams, including hardware, engineering, ads, and services. The business also revealed that at the time Fitbit co-founders James Park and Eric Friedman were quitting.

100 YouTube employees were let go by Google on Wednesday as part of a reorganization.

“To best position us for these opportunities, throughout the second half of 2023, a number of our teams made changes to become more efficient and work better, and to align their resources to their biggest product priorities. Some teams are continuing to make these kinds of organizational changes, which include some role eliminations globally,” a Google spokesperson said in a statement in response to YouTube layoffs.
