The Nigerian military and the nation as a whole are in mourning as President Bola Tinubu announced the passing of Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, Chief of Army Staff, who died in Lagos on the evening of Tuesday, November 5, 2024.

The Chief of Army Staff, who the country with excellence, succumbed to an undisclosed illness at the age of 56. His death represents a profound loss to the Nigerian Armed Forces, as noted by President Tinubu, who extended his condolences to Lagbaja’s family and recognized his lifelong dedication to the nation.

Born on February 28, 1968, Lieutenant General Lagbaja embarked on a remarkable military career spanning over three decades, characterized by resilience and a commitment to service. His career began in 1987 at the Nigerian Defence Academy, where he showed an early passion for military leadership and excellence.

In September 1992, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps, marking the beginning of his impactful service to Nigeria. President Tinubu praised him as a figure of dedication whose “passing is a significant loss to the Nigerian Armed Forces and the nation as a whole,” acknowledging the substantial role he played in enhancing national security.

General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja Distinguished Military Career

Lieutenant General Lagbaja’s career featured numerous assignments that demonstrated his strategic acumen and commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty. After his commissioning in 1992, he served in various command and staff roles, rapidly advancing in rank due to his tactical expertise and ability to lead under challenging conditions.

Notably, Lagbaja held positions as a platoon commander in the 93 Battalion and later in the 72 Special Forces Battalion. His strategic capabilities were essential in high-stakes operations, including Operation ZAKI in Benue State and Lafiya Dole in Borno State, aimed at curbing insurgent activities and stabilizing volatile regions.

Further showcasing his leadership prowess, Lagbaja was appointed Chief of Army Staff on June 19, 2023, by President Tinubu. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing critical army operations, reforming military tactics, and modernizing the Nigerian Army’s approach to counter-terrorism and internal security operations.

Under his command, the Nigerian Army conducted significant operations across various regions, including Operation Udoka in Southeast Nigeria and Operation Forest Sanity across Kaduna and Niger States. His deep understanding of security dynamics and his strategic approach to military challenges were pivotal in these high-pressure deployments.

Lagbaja’s commitment to excellence extended beyond Nigeria. He pursued advanced military training, earning a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the prestigious U.S. Army War College. His academic and professional growth contributed to his reputation as a leader with a clear vision for the Nigerian Army’s role in national and regional security. His colleagues, both within Nigeria and internationally, recognized him as a commander who combined tactical expertise with an unwavering dedication to his troops and their mission.

Legacy and Tributes

As news of Lieutenant General Lagbaja’s passing spread, tributes poured in from military and political figures who had worked alongside him. His legacy, they said, would be remembered for his devotion to Nigeria’s peace and stability. The presidency released a statement recognizing his exceptional service, noting that “his passing is a significant loss to the Nigerian Armed Forces.”

General Lagbaja’s efforts in promoting the welfare of his troops and modernizing the Nigerian Army’s tactical operations were recognized as invaluable to the institution. His tenure as Chief of Army Staff, though brief, was marked by significant efforts toward fostering a more agile, responsive military structure, capable of meeting the complex security challenges faced by Nigeria. His dedication earned him numerous commendations from the Nigerian military and international allies.

The loss of General Lagbaja is felt not only by the Nigerian Armed Forces but also by the entire nation, which has lost a figure dedicated to its defense and peace.
