Catriona Laing, the British High Commissioner in Nigeria, is meeting with the National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Liang pleaded for peaceful elections during the conference and pledged that the British government would penalize any person or organization that incites electoral violence.

Prior to the general election in Nigeria in 2023, the British government has always committed to supporting free, fair, and credible elections.

It has regularly warned Nigerian political figures, via its Nigerian High Commission, with visa sanctions if they encourage election violence.

Several organisations have made similar calls for the preservation of peace before to, during, and after the 2023 general election.

The National Peace Committee, led by the former military head of state, Abdusalami Abubakar, had the presidential contenders sign a peace treaty in Abuja in September, just before to the formal start of the 2023 election campaign season.

At the signing of the accord, the Peace Committee urged the 18 political parties, their presidential candidates, and their spokespeople to commit to issue-based campaigns, as fake news and misinformation are already creating a toxic environment that threatens the peaceful conduct of the general elections in 2023.
