The Police Command in Borno announced that 14 individuals were being prosecuted for suspected violence at political rallies in the state.

Abdu Umar, who briefed journalists in Maiduguri on the command’s accomplishments for the year, stated that seven cases were being prosecuted in court.

Twelve members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and two members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are being prosecuted for crimes bordering on threats of violence and illegal possession of firearms, according to him.

The defendants are also charged with disturbing the peace, encouraging others in a disruptive way, and causing harm and mischief.

The chief of police stated that the police command was committed to ensuring a free and fair election and, in accordance with the Inspector General of Police’s instructions, would arrest and prosecute anybody inciting violence.

Umar added that the command will continue to collaborate with other security agencies to guarantee a trouble-free election.

“Whenever there are issues of progress, there must also be those behind the scene who are working to deter the progress.

“The assertion that somebody is going to disrupt the 2023 elections cannot be possible. We have so far arrested 119 suspected miscreants in various black spots who were working or trying to truncate peace.

“The police are very blessed with manpower. Apart from the conventional strength from the command, we have additional four Mobile Police Force squadron units comprising of about 1,800 policemen.

“This is apart from the other sister agencies that will also deploy their men,’’ he said.

The CP called to state residents to be law-abiding citizens and added that political players should also guarantee that they play by the rules.

In addition, he urged the populace to report any suspicious activity or object in their surroundings so that the police can appropriately secure the state.
